Why should you alternate between sitting and standing during your day?
Decrease back discomfort. You are stretching out your lumbar spine when standing and compressing the lumbar disks when sitting.
Decrease neck discomfort. You are more likely to keep your head over your shoulders when standing versus sitting.
Give your gluteus maximus a break from sitting.
Increase blood flow through the body.
You are more likely to move more when you are standing. Most people are not static when they stand but are static when they sit.
When sitting or standing, you can put your leg on a footrest to change your hip position throughout the day.
You should stand every hour for 10-15 minutes or to your tolerance. You should be standing a couple times in the morning and a couple times in the afternoon.
The following applies when you are sitting or standing:
Elbows should be next to your body versus reaching forward for the keyboard or mouse.
Your desk should be at or below your elbow height depending if you have to look at the keys when you are typing.
If you use a keyboard tray, place the tray at your sitting or standing elbow height.
Head should be over your shoulders versus turtling your head
Chin should be level, not lifted or dropped.
Sit back in your chair and use your chair backrest.
Eyes should be looking at the top 1/4 of monitor screen and your eyes drift down throughout the day to see the whole screen.
Knees and Hips at 90-100 degrees when sitting.
Feet flat on the ground or on a footrest when sitting.
